Hey Sports Tech Fans,
Thanks to those who participated in this week’s Lightning Decision Jam where we focused on trying to solve the problem of raising sponsorship money in the times of Covid-19 and beyond!
Another week of lock down and another week of uncertainty for the world of sports.
AT&T lost close to a million paid subscribers with no live sport on, which is almost double over the same period last year.
Will they return or will this just accelerate the cord cutting we have seen over the past few years?
ESPN have reportedly asked for free rights to the Korean baseball league, in the lowest ball offer possible. With no other live sport really on, it would seem ESPN are more desperate for the deal than the Korean Baseball Organisation.
Meanwhile its reported that BT Sports & Sky could show all remaining Premier League games, should they resume this season, in a bid to get more people watching the games since the games will almost certainly be behind closed doors.
Relevant Sports (of International Champions Cup and trying to bring La Liga games to North America fame), Uninterrupted (LeBron James media company) are organising an esports tournament for soccer that will feature pro athletes from the NFL, NBA, NSWL and La Liga athletes.
Proceeds will go to charity and its great to see female athletes being involved as well as most other esports tournaments spawned in the last 6 weeks have been very heavily male dominated.
Mixing athletes from North American sports and leagues and La Liga teams (with no Real Madrid or Barcelona players) is a great way to build wide support and interest whilst not relying on the two dominant teams from La Liga, which will surely help to promote the other sides. This is a necessity if the La Liga North America games ever get off the ground as Real Madrid and Barcelona can’t and won’t be playing every year.
Loads of other great stories below including some ratings on the Michael Jordan documentary (which is on Netflix outside of the US), HypeSports have an open call for sports tech startups for their virtual accelerator as well as rooftop tennis from Italy and an interview with Mark Cuban on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, the last two items this week!
Have a great esporting weekend,
