Another bumper week in the Sports Tech world, 50+ stories!
The Deloitte Money League was published, which ranks the top soccer clubs in the world by revenue.
This years top spot goes to Barcelona, which isn’t too surprising but the way they got beyond the €800, the first of any soccer club, is rather intriguing.
The New York Times article below goes into more detail but the TL:DR is that in 2018 Barcelona brought its merchandising in house after a contract expired with Nike and the upside is, more revenue!
It’s not rocket science but a fascinating case study in foregoing the guaranteed money from Nike to do it in house.
With a brand as big as Barcelona’s, it makes sense that doing it in house could prove lucrative.
Will other soccer clubs follow suit?
The race is on for the first soccer club to generate €1 billion and any extra revenue source will be looked at by clubs.
If any of the current top ten manage to get rights to their own games and launch their own OTT platform, it would certainly tip the balance but that is unlikely as those in the top 10 are part of collective deals with their respective league.
