Hey Sports Tech Fans,
A week after Amazon delivered its first live Premier League content and the first study into its success is out. Long story short it was positive! The study claims that 72% of Premier League fans in the UK now have access to live games. This compares to 54% who have a BT Sports or Sky Sports subscription.
Amazon have also claimed a record number of sign ups in the UK and that millions tuned in to watch the games.
Hot on the heels of their first succesfull broadcast in the UK they have won the rights in Germany for the Champions League. Their contract will allow them to show 16 games a season, giving them top pick and exclusive rights to Tuesday night fixtures in the group and knockout stages.
Again Amazon are entering markets with enough content to make it appealing to customers but not so much content that sees them in a bidding war with the main players. It’s a fascinating strategy as ultimately they are looking to increase sales of the Fire TV platform and Prime video subscriptions, which so happen to come with free shipping so they can corner the market for all your goods bought online!
In other Amazon related news, Twitch.tv, their gaming streaming platform has done deals with some of their biggest streaming stars to prevent them from leaving to the likes of YouTube, Mixer or Facebook.
The Streamer wars are just as interesting to me as the streaming wars and I expect both to continue into 2020.
Have a great sporting week!
