Hey Sports Tech fans,
Piracy is an ongoing issue in the world of sports and Italian authorities shut down 600 sites that were streaming Euro 2020 content from Europe to users around the world.
End users now face a fine of up to €1,32 euro each, which is a very big difference from previous efforts to shut pirates down.
Typically it is the operators that face the consequences of being caught but with IP addresses being registered end users now face an anxious wait to see if they will be getting a fine in the post.
Piracy takes a lot of money out of the sports market and into the black market, which impacts the entire economy of sports.
While news like this is welcome for the industry, will it solve the issue long term?
It might just encourage more sites to pop up to fill the gap in the market and with users now looking like they might face fines, will the VPN market get another reason to grow even further after a boom over the last few years.
Have a great sporting weekend,
