Hey Sports Tech Fans,
It is a bitter sweet week for women in sport.
In the UK the BBC and Sky have signed a broadcasting deal for the Women’s Super League (WSL) that will make it the biggest broadcasting deal for any professional woman’s soccer league in the world at £8 million per year.
The BBC will air two games per game round, while Sky Sports will air a total of 44 games throughout the season.
The remaining 75 games will be aired on the FA’s OTT platform, The FA Player.
This is a massive step forward as only a few years ago the games started on the FA Player for free.
There is still a long way to go but this will provide vital funds and with the majority of games still being free to watch for fans it will help grow the game and bring it to new audiences.
Conversely in the US we have seen the shocking treatment of the female teams at the NCAA March Madness competition. Videos have circulated of the substandard training equipment being provided which essentially was a few weights in stark contrast to the full gym equipment being provided to their male counterparts.
Female sports will still be a massive growth area in the overall sports landscape but there are some massive strides that need to take place in order for that to happen.
But this week showed that even basic steps aren’t being provided which is a really sad state of affairs in 2021.
Rich is back with more F1 stories as F1 partners with Zoom as the official communications provider and will see VIP like experiences provided to fans of paddock access. It remains to be seen if regular fans can participate but with the F1 back in action this weekend with the inaugural race of 2021 taking place in Bahrain, I am sure we will be able to report on this next week.
Have a great sporting weekend,
Will
