Hi Sports Tech fans,
Some great feedback from community members but it has me craving more. The average time so far is 3 mins, so it would be great if you could take 3 mins to help shape this community
Congratulations to the US women’s national team as they won their 4th World Cup as they became the Queens of Lyon. The good news doesnt end there as ESPN sign up to broadcast the NSWL league and Budweiser jumps in as a sponsor as the game continues to grow as record numbers tuned in in the US for the final last week. Women’s soccer will continue to grow which is great for the sport.
In another trend we have noticed in 2019 but not really discussed is sports stars launching their own media companies. This week David Beckham launched his own, Studio 99 and he will create content for others as well as himself. One of his first will document the creation of his MLS franchise Miami FC. His company will also partner with LeBron’s own media company.
So far we have seen David Beckham, LeBron James, Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, Russel Wilson and others launch their own media companies. This is a trend that I am a huge fan of. Stars are looking to extend their career and by setting up their own media companies they can keep themselves in the spot light as well as creating a stable business that will generate cash by developing media content for others.
On a related note Rory McIlroy has partnered with NBC for GolfPass which will broadcast live content from the Scottish open and show Rory’s 4 rounds, assuming he makes the cut. The $9.99 a month subscription will couple live streaming golf with exclusive content like a podcast hosted by Rory as well as tips and coaching videos.
This is a huge trend for me and something we will see proliferate as sports stars and clubs realise the potential at their finger tips to create their own content that they own and can syndicate to others.
Lots of other stories below including all the usual trends, betting, streaming, eSports.
With the Cricket World Cup final this weekend between England and New Zealand the video of the week this week is from Netflix’s show Patriot Act by Hasan Minhaj, discussing the corruption in Cricket. It is the final story below.
Have a great weekend and please spend the 3 mins needed to provide me with feedback
