Hey Sports Tech Fans,
The Toronto Raptors are NBA Champions. They overcame the Golden State Warriors who were going for a 3 in a row and an impressive 4 in 5 years. But the Drake jinx is over after a slew of selfies with sports stars from other teams and sports resulting in that team losing high profile games, the Toronto Raptors are the first Canadian team to win the NBA Championship!
In news this week, adults in the US are now spending more time on their mobile devices than watching TV. It has been coming ever since the iPhone came out but it’s still a shock to see mobile coming out on top and likely to extend its lead in the coming years. It sets up OTT and interactive broadcast platforms for a huge potential market as this is how people are consuming now and demand more than passive viewing experiences.
La Liga were caught using their app to spy on illegal streams and have been fined for doing so. This is a very interesting story as the app allowed the league to use the location services and mic to identify bars who are streaming games illegally. La Liga will appeal the fine but it is bad for PR a league who are looking to earn new fans around the world.
On the topic of illegal streams the heavy weight fight between Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz, which saw a huge upset with Ruiz becoming the first Mexican heavy weight champion of the world, was streamed illegally 13 million times! It was a great fight and well worth checking out the highlights as boxing seems to be on a bit of a resurgence in the past 12 months after falling behind the UFC in terms of attention.
The US Open teed off yesterday and the technology available and on show for viewers is a sign of things to come for golf and other sports. Fox Sports’ broadcast will showcase TrackMan which is a hardware device placed on the tee box and will give stats on swing speed, ball speed, smash factor, carry distance among others. It is sport stat nerds dream to have this information in near real time. There will be more AR on show as well as more drones to give stunning views of the Pebble Beach course. Wifi 6 will also be available for people at the course which boasts speeds upto 10 times faster than regular standard.
The Majors always tee up a great offering but as a sports tech nerd like myself I think it is a much watch as this not only impacts this tournament and golf, but can be the showcase of things to come across multiple sports.
The other news this week covers the usual topics we have seen in 2019, eSports, betting, social eCommerce, streaming among others.
Techstars Sports Tech accelerator announced their first cohort of companies this week. You can find the story below.
The podcast of the week is from 99% Invisible, a design focused podcast which is a weekly listen for me as it covers all things design and offers a fascinating insight. This week they cover the Toronto Raptors and their unconventional entry into the NBA with a Barney style jersey and a team name chosen due to the popularity of Jurassic Park in the mid 90s. It is the bottom story below.
Have a great weekend,
