Hey Sports Tech Fans,
Disney have announced some fantastic results on the back of their launch of Disney+ and ESPN+ over the last 12 months.
Disney are now generating $787 million a month from their streaming services!
If that was consistent over the course of 12 months, it would generate $9.4 billion a year!
If Disney’s streaming assets were a standalone company, hat would be enough to rank them comfortably inside the Fortune 500, in and around the 330th rank for most revenue!
Obviously Disney has a wealth of IP under its control but the rate of growth is remarkable!
This puts massive pressure on their rivals like Netflix and DAZN, as with a plethora of streaming services to subscribe to, subscription fatigue is a very real worry. With Disney bundling of their services, their offering is very attractive, especially to families as there is something for everyone.
DAZN announced they had 8 million paying subscribers worldwide in early December. Disney announced that ESPN+ has doubled to 7.6 million paying subscribers, so the rate at which ESPN has caught up is insane.
The streaming wars have been raging for a number of years now but are really set to heat up in 2020 and beyond as more and more sports rights come up for grabs.
With NBC launching Peacock this summer, we have another entrant who has a foot in entertainment and sports which could see a massive uptake as well, putting even more pressure on the existing streaming platforms.
Have a great sporting weekend,
